The Met Gala is already viewed as one of the world’s most exclusive events, but it looks as though host Anna Wintour is angling to elevate the glittering affair even further by gaining the royal seal of approval.
While speaking to Today‘s Jenna Bush Hager about this year’s event, which takes place on Monday, the editor-in-chief of Vogue confessed that she would love nothing more than for Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton to attend the soiree as her guests – while cheekily admitting that they can ‘leave their husbands at home’.
‘I would love to have the Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge together, that would be my dream’ the 69-year-old said, before adding: ‘They can leave their husbands at home. It’s the two of them I want!’

Sorry boys! The 69-year-old Vogue editor confessed that Kate and Meghan, pictured with Princes William and Harry in 2018, can ‘leave their husbands at home’ if they choose to attend
Anna’s clear request that Meghan and Kate attend the event ‘together’ comes in the wake of several reports suggesting that there has been a rift between the two women.
The rumors began swirling shortly after it was revealed that Meghan and Harry were moving away from Kensington Palace, where they lived alongside Kate and William, in order to make their family home 25 miles away in Windsor.
There were claims that Kate broke down in tears following Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid’s dress fitting ahead of Meghan and Harry’s wedding in May, as well as suggestions the pair had clashed over palace staff.
Similarly, there have been multiple claims made about an ‘ongoing rift’ between brothers William and Harry, however several royal sources have spoken out to insist that there is little truth to the suggestion, and that the Cambridges and Sussexes are simply ‘very different people’.
Interestingly, this year’s event – the theme of which is Camp: Notes on Fashion – is being co-hosted by one of 37-year-old Meghan’s closest friends, tennis pro Serena Williams.

Royal connections: The editrix, who has hosted the event for more than 20 years, has several ties with the royals, and sat next to the Queen at her first London Fashion Week show in 2018
The 37-year-old sports star, who hosted Meghan’s New York City baby shower in February, will co-chair the camp-themed event alongside Anna, Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, and Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele.

Although the royals’ attendance at such an event would certainly be considered a real coup, it is not entirely out of the question, particularly because Anna, who has organized the event for more than 20 years, already has a connection to the royal family.
Last year, Princess Beatrice made her debut at the event, wearing a stunning floor-length purple gown by Alberta Ferretti.
And in 1996, William and Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana, was a guest at the soiree, attending alongside her close friend, former Harper’s Bazaar editor Liz Tilberis.
Beyond the Met Gala, Anna has a number of other ties to the royals, too.
The fashion editrix was made a Dame in the 2017 New Year’s Honors, and in February 2018, she achieved a major victory on British turf when she arranged for Her Majesty the Queen to attend her first ever London Fashion Week show.
Once there, the royal was seated on the front row alongside a beaming Anna herself.
The royal family also has close ties with British Vogue; Kate Middleton appeared on the cover of the publication’s 100th issue in April 2016, posing for a series of stunning portraits that were featured inside the centenary issue, and hung on display at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Anna, who was born and raised in the UK before moving to the US in the mid-1970s, also had a close relationship with Princess Diana before she died in 1997, and recently recalled a lunch that she and famed magazine editor Tina Brown enjoyed with the mother-of-two just six weeks before her death.
‘She looked incredible first of all,’ Anna said at the Women in the World Summit earlier this month. ‘That was the most important thing and she looked fantastic.
‘I heard that she spent a lot of time deciding what to wear to that particular lunch.’
The fashion legend also praised Diana for her relationship with the media, saying: ‘I think that the part of her popularity was that Princess Diana really was so good with the media and was so in tune with them and welcomed them rather than standing back.
‘In a way, she was certainly the first person in the royal family to understand the benefits of that.’
While members of the British royal family have only attended the Met Gala on very rare occasions, the lavish soiree has played host to a host of royals from other countries, including Princess Lee Radziwill, wife of Polish aristocrat Prince Stanisław Albrecht Radziwill, and Princess Olympia of Greece.
